The Town of Bystřice nad Perntejnem TodayDuring the 19th century the town experienced an economic boom that went along with a rapid development of crafts. In the 1960s the area of the town increased considerably which had to a great extent been related to uranium mining in the region. In the course of several decades the population of the town tripled.

Nowadays Bystřice nad Perntejnem has a population of 9,007 and it is a municipality with an extended public administration sphere. Its scope of administration covers approximately one third of the district of ďár nad Sázavou.
At the moment, uranium mining is being cut down on. That is why the town encourages creation of new employment opportunities, especially in the industrial zone, where several new businesses have already started operating. Moreover there are further properties with necessary infrastructure available to investors. A new biomass boiler plant, which supplies the major part of the town with heat, was constructed. The town has its own sewage clarification plant, which is planned to be modernized in 2004. Most of the town is also supplied with gas.
The town is a natural center of cultural and social life in the area. There are nine educational institutions there.
The scenery between the deep valley of the river Svratka and the foot of ďárské vrchy (the ďár highlands) invites for pleasant walks regardless of the season. The beautiful area around Bystřice suggests that there will be a rapid development of travel industry in the future.
Between 2000 and 2002 a new sports ground was built in Bystřice. There is a multi-purpose sports stadium with a swimming pool, a climbing wall, a fitness center, a squash court, bowling and ninepins. There is also an outdoor heated swimming pool with three separate pools, one of them containing salt water. Furthermore, there are two grass football pitches, multi-purpose playing area with artificial lawn, two clay tennis courts and a beach volleyball field.
